Kharkhorin-Erdenezuu Monastery

After breakfast at your hotel, your guide and driver will take you to Kharkhorin, the ancient Mongolian capital founded by Chingis Khan in 1220. Once a thriving political, economic, and religious center, it was destroyed in 1235 by Ming troops. The site, protected since 1961, features relics like granite turtles, palace foundations, stone lions, columns, and traces of an irrigation channel. Symbolizing longevity and protection against floods, the turtles reflect Mongolian reverence since the 8th century. The site also yielded 230 coins from various countries, highlighting its historical importance.

While July and August bring occasional rain, Mongolia's climate ensures abundant sunny days. For an ideal Gobi Desert adventure, plan your visit in June or September.

In Ulaanbaatar, you'll enjoy delicious meals at European and Asian restaurants. Mongolian cuisine mainly features mutton, beef, rice, and noodles. Trail rations might include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese, and occasionally yak! Some days, you'll have lunchboxes from tourist camps, and overall, guests are pleased with the food. If you're a vegetarian, please inform us in advance. While alcohol isn't included, you're welcome to bring your own.

Opt for warm, lightweight layers, including a waterproof jacket, and bring a hat and headscarf for sun and wind protection. Remember to pack insect repellent, sunscreen, lip balm, water purification tablets, and a basic first aid kit (headache, cold, diarrhea medicine; bandages; any prescribed medication). Don't forget your camera equipment.
